Key Experience

Dr Shanks has 40 years experience of engineering analysis, design, construction & installationprincipally in the offshore industry. Project experience includes Hutton, Snorre and Heidrun TLP's plus Central North Sea and Jotun FPSO's, with reference to system and component engineering for riser systems.  Specific riser and pipeline expertise includes top tensioned risers, flexible pipe riser systems, umbilical systems, steel offloading lines, marine pipelines, FSHR towers and deepwater SCRs. Dr. Shanks has seven years of operator experience managing and technically supervising two major riser projects in the North Sea. Prior to setting up RiserTec, he was also responsible for establishing the riser group within INTEC Engineering, Houston where he was extensively involved in several deepwater GoM riser projects. Design of large diameter (24-30in) SCR’s for 4500-6500ft water depths for GOM, W.Africa and North Sea using various host vessel designs including Spar’s, Semi’s and FPSO’s. Finite Element Analysis of Riser systems using ANSYS and ABAQUS his specialist areas include:

  • Fatigue, fracture and wear assessment in steel (high strength) and titanium, use of composite risers for intervention packages
  • Strain based design of pipeline systems and assessment of component failure mechanisms for risers and chain systems
  • Detailed dynamic analysis of floating and wave loaded systems including coupled analysis and developed in-house energy balanced IL and CF VIV assessment package RTviv
  • Back analysis of riser systems using multi-station strain and accelerometer data to correlate model and actual response and benchmark analysis results for extreme and fatigue design
